Planning a trip to the Algarve? You’re in for a treat! Portugal’s southern coastline is a slice of paradise with its golden beaches, picturesque towns, and stunning cliffs. Whether you have three days or a full week, this Algarve travel blog will help you make the most of your vacation.
The Algarve in south Portugal is known for its stunning coastline, charming villages, and rich cultural heritage. The Algarve offers a mix of relaxation and adventure for any public including vibrant nightlife in Albufeira, golden cliffs and beaches in South and West coasts, fresh seafood, sea natural caves and a lot more of hidden gems covered in this Algarve travel blog.
To fully explore the region, I recommend staying at least 5 to 7 days. This gives you enough time to visit different parts of the coast, relax on the beaches, and soak up the local culture.
If you're short on time, a 3-night itinerary can still hit some of the Algarve's highlights. But if you can spare a week, you'll be able to dive deeper into this stunning region, discovering hidden gems and savouring everything Algarve has to offer
Algarve is the region located in South Portugal or South West Europe if you are looking at a larger scale.
It is recommended to rent a car to visit Algarve, but it really depends on how much you want to explore. A car gives you the flexibility to visit remote beaches, explore quaint villages, and venture off the beaten path. The Algarve is quite spread out, and some of the best spots are not easily accessible by bus or train. If you’re planning to explore beyond the main towns, renting a car is highly recommended.
Choosing where to stay in the Algarve can be tricky, but I already made a blog about the Best Cities for a Vacation in Algarve. Either way here below is a quick summary, but I recommend checking the other blog post to see what works best for you.

Welcome to the Algarve! Depending on your arrival time, spend your first day settling into your accommodation and exploring the local area. If you have the energy, head to the beach to catch your first Algarve sunset.
Start your adventure by heading to the west coast in Algarve, one of my favourite areas in the region. From Praia de Odeceixe all the way down to Sagres' cliffs. Here are some recommended places to visit to explore the west coast of Algarve from top to bottom:
Important! Of course these are many places to see in one day, but if you are staying a full week considering spending 2 days in the west coast of Algarve.
Benagil Caves are the most iconic sea caves only accessed by boat or kayak. The cave’s unique dome and natural skylight are a photographer's dream.
If you are not up for the sunrise cave tour, I truly recommend getting a speed boat to the Benagil Caves from Portimão as you will be able to see more caves located in the south coast and avoid the float of tourist in kayaks in a mission to see Benagil Caves.
After your cave adventure, spend the rest of the day relaxing on the south coast beaches. Praia da Rocha in Portimão is a great spot with plenty of beachside cafes and restaurants where you can unwind.
If you’re on a shorter trip, today might be the day to say goodbye to the Algarve. However, if you have more time, use this day to relax or explore any areas you might have missed. Maybe revisit your favorite beach, take a scenic drive through the countryside, or enjoy a leisurely lunch in a quaint fishing village.
For those on a longer stay, you can continue exploring the region's hidden gems or even take a day trip to the Alentejo region.

The best time to visit the Algarve is during the spring (April to June) or fall (September to October) when the weather is warm, and the crowds are smaller. Summer months (July and August) are popular for beachgoers but can be quite busy and hot.
Algarve is warm enough to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities without the intense heat of summer in October. Daytime temperatures typically range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Evenings can be cooler, so it's a good idea to pack a light jacket or sweater.
Traveling from Lisbon to the Algarve is convenient and offers a few options:
The Algarve is well-connected by public transportation (at least the south coast), but renting a car is highly recommended for more flexibility.
While it’s always nice to learn a few basic phrases, English is widely spoken in the Algarve, especially in tourist areas.
Absolutely! The Algarve is a fantastic destination for families, offering plenty of activities for kids, from water parks and boat tours to safe, sandy beaches and family-friendly resorts.
Lagos is the best location for first time visitors in Algarve due to its multiple nearby beaches and vibrant city life. Portimão also tends to be a cheaper and recommended option, but this varies depending on your needs so check 'Where to stay for a vacation in Algarve?' section above.
