Algarve Travel Blog: How to Spend 3-7 Days Exploring Portugal's Coastline

Planning a trip to the Algarve? You’re in for a treat! Portugal’s southern coastline is a slice of paradise with its golden beaches, picturesque towns, and stunning cliffs. Whether you have three days or a full week, this Algarve travel blog will help you make the most of your vacation.

What is the Algarve known for?

Miradouro Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve in south Portugal is known for its stunning coastline, charming villages, and rich cultural heritage. The Algarve offers a mix of relaxation and adventure for any public including vibrant nightlife in Albufeira, golden cliffs and beaches in South and West coasts, fresh seafood, sea natural caves and a lot more of hidden gems covered in this Algarve travel blog.

How long should I stay in Algarve?

To fully explore the region, I recommend staying at least 5 to 7 days. This gives you enough time to visit different parts of the coast, relax on the beaches, and soak up the local culture.

If you're short on time, a 3-night itinerary can still hit some of the Algarve's highlights. But if you can spare a week, you'll be able to dive deeper into this stunning region, discovering hidden gems and savouring everything Algarve has to offer

Where is Algarve Portugal on the map?

Algarve is the region located in South Portugal or South West Europe if you are looking at a larger scale.

Do I need a car to visit Algarve?

Lisbon to Algarve roadtrip

It is recommended to rent a car to visit Algarve, but it really depends on how much you want to explore. A car gives you the flexibility to visit remote beaches, explore quaint villages, and venture off the beaten path. The Algarve is quite spread out, and some of the best spots are not easily accessible by bus or train. If you’re planning to explore beyond the main towns, renting a car is highly recommended.

Where to stay for a vacation in Algarve?

Choosing where to stay in the Algarve can be tricky, but I already made a blog about the Best Cities for a Vacation in Algarve. Either way here below is a quick summary, but I recommend checking the other blog post to see what works best for you.

  • Lagos is the best city in Algarve for first-time visitors.
  • Portimão is the best city in Algarve for activities.
  • Faro is the best city in Algarve for local life.
  • Vilamoura is the best city in Algarve for a luxury escape.
  • Albufeira is the best city in Algarve for nightlife.
💡
The Algarve is small enough that you can easily explore multiple cities during your stay. If you are in for a long stay, considering spending some time in at least 2 cities (e.g. Faro and Portimão)

Best Cities for a Vacation in Algarve

What to See for a Vacation in Algarve? Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Welcome to the Algarve! Depending on your arrival time, spend your first day settling into your accommodation and exploring the local area. If you have the energy, head to the beach to catch your first Algarve sunset.

💡
If you are still deciding where to stay and key spots in major cities have a quick look at Best Cities for a Vacation in Algarve.

Day 2: Explore Algarve's West Coast Stunning Beaches

Start your adventure by heading to the west coast in Algarve, one of my favourite areas in the region. From Praia de Odeceixe all the way down to Sagres' cliffs. Here are some recommended places to visit to explore the west coast of Algarve from top to bottom:

  1. Praia de Odeceixe
  2. Praia da Arrifana
  3. Bordeira's beach
  4. Praia do Amado
  5. Pontal da Carrapateira (sunset spot)
  6. Sagres & Sagres Fortress (sunset spot)
  7. Cape St. Vincent (sunset spot)

Important! Of course these are many places to see in one day, but if you are staying a full week considering spending 2 days in the west coast of Algarve.

  • One day you can visit Praia de Odeceixe, Praia da Arrifana and then see the sunset in Pontal da Carrapateira which is next to Bordeira's beach.
  • Then another day you can visit Sagres Fortress, relax at Praia do Amado, and come back down to see the sunset at either Sagres or Cape St. Vincent.

Day 3: Benagil Caves and South Coast Relaxation

Benagil Caves are the most iconic sea caves only accessed by boat or kayak. The cave’s unique dome and natural skylight are a photographer's dream.

If you are not up for the sunrise cave tour, I truly recommend getting a speed boat to the Benagil Caves from Portimão as you will be able to see more caves located in the south coast and avoid the float of tourist in kayaks in a mission to see Benagil Caves.

After your cave adventure, spend the rest of the day relaxing on the south coast beaches. Praia da Rocha in Portimão is a great spot with plenty of beachside cafes and restaurants where you can unwind.

Again, if you are staying in Algarve a full week or want to take advantage of your short time in Algarve to explore South coast beaches see Recommended Beautiful Beaches in Portugal Algarve.

Day 4: Departure or Relaxation Day

If you’re on a shorter trip, today might be the day to say goodbye to the Algarve. However, if you have more time, use this day to relax or explore any areas you might have missed. Maybe revisit your favorite beach, take a scenic drive through the countryside, or enjoy a leisurely lunch in a quaint fishing village.

For those on a longer stay, you can continue exploring the region's hidden gems or even take a day trip to the Alentejo region.
