This is what you should know before you visit Kuala Lumpur. In this blogs you will find travel tips on transport, accomodation, food, weather, shopping and more!
Try to exit the airplane quickly and head to immigration control to avoid really fast and slow queues. I had to wait like 1-1.5h just to pass through the immigration control…
You can also get a SIM card at the airport which can cost about 20 ringgits ($5) lasting you for 7 days.
Grab app is a great app to get around for a reasonable price as Uber is not available in Malaysia anymore. Transport from the airport to KL central area can cost about 60-80 ringgit ($14-18).
Tube is also very convenient and well communicated. I recommend trying it out if you can. They also have air conditioning! But it sometimes gets really full.
Peak hours are between 8am-10am and after 3-4pm. There is a lot of traffic in KL and a 20 min journey can become a 2h journey if you are stuck in traffic. If you are in KL for a visit, I recommend exploring far places like Batu caves during working hours (i.e. 6am if you like to explore really early or 9-10 am) and stay not so far from central after 5-6pm.
KL is a big developed city with very good hotels or apartments that you can enjoy.
I recommend KL Gateway for an apartment or the Majestic Place by Swiss Garden for a hotel. KL Gateway has a mall at the bottom of the residences for which you can shop or purchase food from a supermarket and it also has an outdoor swimming pool and gym facilities. If you prefer hotels, the Majestic Place has an outdoor swimming pool and gym facilities too on its roof, which offer fantastic views to the Petronas Towers.
Food can cost you around 15-20-ringgit ($4-5) per person. Try to go to restaurants were local people go (such as the SS15 area) so that you can get a cheaper price and more traditional food. You can ask for non-spicy food if you don’t tolerate it. There are also multiple places where you can buy street food if you are interested such as Bakit Bintang, Petaling Street and more (see my other post on top places to visit in KL here).
There are also various tropical and exotic fruits like Durian, jackfruit, dragon fruit and many other that you must try out!
Try not to drink tap water if you want to remain healthy. It is recommended to buy large bottles of water to keep in your room or apartment and carry frozen small ones around whenever you go out.
Very humid and hot weather usually between 26 and 34°C. I recommend you wearing light clothes and carry a water bottle with you at all times to avoid dehydration. All indoor places have air conditioner so if you feel overwhelmed by the hot weather you can always rest in such places.
Central Market and Petaling street very close to each other and very good place to do some shopping and get souveniers, traditional clothes, absolutely original Gucci bags or Supreme T-Shirts or anything you can think off for a very good price.
You can also bargain the prices and here is a tip:
If they reject your offer you can go and try somewhere else as it is probable that they will have that item that you liked too. You can also be generous and make someone's day by supporting them financially too.
KLCC Shopping – This is a typical shopping mall that you can find anywhere in the world but it is a big place and nice to visit and walk around and do some shopping if you wish. Note that prices here are fixed are not negotiable!
