Here are the required documents to apply for a freelance or remote work visa in Portugal:

  1. Remote work contract.
  2. Proof of income above €3,280 net per month (i.e. last 3 month payslips + bank statements with savings).
  3. Proof of accommodation in Portugal (at least 6 months for rentals).
  4. Passport.
  5. Passport size photos.
  6. NIF Registration Certificate (Portuguese tax identification number).
  7. Clean criminal record (might ask to be translated in Portuguese).
  8. Proof of health insurance covering your stay in Portugal.
  9. Statement or cover letter in English explaining why you want to move to Portugal.
  10. Tickets to Portugal on approximate date of arrival with the visa (not always required).

    3. connections you have in Portugal (if any);
    4. accommodation in Portugal;

  3. Submit your visa application to your local Portuguese consulate or embassy (€180 fee per person).
  4. Await for your visa (typically takes 60 days but can take up to 4 months). You can track progress online and collect at the place where you applied or via post.
  5. Enter Portugal and register as resident. The visa will allow you to stay in Portugal for 120 days, during this period you should book an appointment with the SEF (Servico de Estangeiros e Fronteiras) to register as a resident. This is usually done on your behalf when apply for your visa, but if not you can make an appointment through the SEF portal (expect a €170 fee).

Your residence permit is valid for 24 months. After that period, you can attend another interview with AIMA (aka SEF) to renew your visa for 36 months.
